Precision 24-Channel Waveguide Feed

Date

June 2025

Location

Newton Abbot, UK

We recently collaborated on a specialist radar project with our agent Redislogar and their end customer, a specialist in satellite communications and antenna solutions and required an advanced radar component designed specifically for tracking space debris.

The project involved designing a compact precision 24-channel waveguide feed. The waveguide needed to fit within a defined, limited space and achieve specific phase accuracy and insertion loss targets.

Our approach began by carefully analysing the requirements provided by the end customer. We used detailed CAD modelling to ensure accurate routing and to avoid potential interference. Through iterative design and close collaboration with the end customer, our engineering team developed a customised assembly method, including machining, brazing, painting and cleaning. Each component was tested both individually and as part of the final assembly, ensuring compliance with the required specifications.

Despite initial concerns from the customer regarding the specifications, consistent communication and structured prototyping provided both clarity and confidence throughout the project and with the end result. The final assembly successfully exceeded expectations regarding VSWR and insertion loss, operating in the WG17/WR75 waveguide size, covering a 15% frequency band in the 10-15 GHz range.

We continue to collaborate with the end customer on subsequent phases of the project and provide ongoing communication around future aspects of the project.
